Lunenburg and the surrounding areas offer an abundance of beautiful destinations for outdoor recreation. A camping weekend may provide the perfect escape if you enjoy hiking, boating, fishing, and other activities. We've rounded up some of the best campgrounds around Lunenburg for your consideration. Load up your vehicle and check out one of these prime destinations.

Pearl Hill State Park

Pearl Hill State Park covers 1,000 acres with abundant hiking and biking trails to explore. The park also features a five-acre swimming pond, educational programs, and opportunities for hunting and fishing. Pearl Hill has 50 campsites and a modern bathhouse with flush toilets and showers. Each camp has a designated picnic table, fire ring, and pedestal grill.

The campground has a mixture of standard non-electric sites, tent-only sites, and tent/pop-up sites. You may have up to four people on any individual campsite. Massachusetts state law mandates that you purchase your firewood on the property. This campground maintains quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., and you may not use a generator during this time unless you’re operating a medical device. Alcohol is not permitted in the park, and pets must remain leashed at all times.

Woodmore Family Campground

Woodmore Family Campground spans 23 acres and features 125 campsites. This destination includes an abundance of entertaining amenities, including a swimming pool, tournament-size Wiffle ball field, full basketball court, boat rentals, bocci ball, sand volleyball, horseshoes, and lake fishing. When the weather isn't cooperating, you can head into the family room to enjoy the arcade, television, and Wi-Fi.

Woodmore features a well-stocked camp store complete with firewood and propane. There’s no campfire-out time provided that visitors maintain quiet hours. Check the events schedule before your visit to see what's happening. Woodmore regularly hosts special events and activities like summer Bingo, holiday crafts, chili cook-offs, potluck dinners, pinewood derby, rain gutter regatta races, and more.

This campground offers a variety of camping accommodations. Premium sites come equipped with water, 30- or 50-amp electric, sewer, and cable TV hookups. Deluxe sites feature water, 30-amp electric, sewer, and cable TV hookups. The basic sites feature water and 30-amp electric hookups. The rustic waterfront sites are available with or without a camping platform. These sites feature common cold water. All campsites have a picnic table and a fire ring.

Otter River State Forest

Otter River State Forest offers recreational opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding on its trails. While the park hosts select educational programs, most of its highlights are best explored on your own so you can set your preferred pace. The trails include something for everyone, from the easy 2.5-mile Wilder-McKenzie Nature Trail to the moderately challenging 9.5-mile Forest Loop Ride. You can also explore the park's signature paddle trails if you have a canoe or kayak. The Otter River Paddle covers 5.5 miles through lush marshes, and The Millers River Paddle covers 3 miles of rugged wilderness terrain.

In the summer months, you can go swimming in Beaman Pond. Fishing and hunting are available as well. You’re welcome to bring your pets to the park, but they must always remain leashed. Otter River State Forest offers 14 pop-up/tent sites, 10 standard non-electric sites, 46 tent-only sites, and four yurts. You'll find flush toilets and hot showers available throughout the campground. All campsites come equipped with a picnic table and a fire ring. The yurts feature bunk beds, water, and electricity. Linens are not included. The yurts are not pet-friendly.

Lake Dennison Recreation Area

Lake Dennison Recreation Area features over 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Each year, the Massachusetts Triathlon takes place here, supporting health and fitness in the community. Lake Dennison offers a swimming beach open from late May through early September. A boat ramp provides canoes, kayaks, and non-motorized boats access to the 85-acre lake.

Lake Dennison has 141 standard non-electric sites and five tent-only campsites. Nestled in the woods, these sites provide plenty of shade. Every site comes equipped with a picnic table and grill. Campers have access to restrooms with flush toilets and showers, and the campground also features a pavilion and dump station. The campground prohibits alcohol on its property.

Kings Family Campground

Situated along the shores of Lake Manchaug, Kings Family Campground features 1,200 feet of stunning waterfront. The lake features a beautifully groomed swimming beach, a fishing dock, and a power-boat marina with 20 slips. An open-air pavilion sits adjacent to the lake, offering the perfect place for Saturday night music and dancing. Other amenities include horseshoes, a basketball court, a volleyball court, a playground, laundry facilities, and Kings Country Store.

Kings Family Campground hosts various special events to keep campers entertained, including Bingo on Fridays, kids’ activities on Saturday afternoons, and Saturday evening bonfires. Sites are available with or without electricity. Guests can access free Wi-Fi on-site, and the restrooms offer spacious showers and hot water.

Location: 24 Holt Road, Manchaug, Massachusetts.

Wells State Park

Covering 1,400 acres, Wells State Park features more than 12 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding trails for campers to enjoy. The landscape offers scenic views of the wetlands, cliffs, hardwood forests, and lush valleys. Walker Pond covers 104 acres and offers boating and fishing. The park hosts nature programs from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The park offers 55 tent/RV sites and four yurts. Every campsite includes a fire ring, picnic table, and grill. Campers have access to two comfort stations and water spigots. Dump stations are not available.
