Nothing tastes better on a hot day than an ice cream cone. That's why we're so lucky to have several amazing ice cream shops near Fitchburg and Lunenburg. While these towns may be quite small, there are still plenty of ice cream options to be found in our local area. These are a few of the best options to check out while the weather is still warm and welcoming.

Carol's Dairy Bar

Carol's Dairy Bar seems to have it all, including seafood, sandwiches, ice cream cones, and sundaes. If you're looking for a sweet treat, Carol's Dairy Bar hits the spot. It’s the kind of place where you can show up for a quick and casual bite. In fact, the restaurant feels like a nostalgic throwback to the old days thanks to its walk-up window system. It's such a popular destination, people don’t mind lining up for a bite — in fact, it’s part of the charm.

Carol's offers 24 flavors of soft-serve ice cream, including blueberry, maple nut, peanut butter, strawberry, rum, and black raspberry. You can get your ice cream in a cone, cup, shake, sundae, or waffle cone. If you aren't sure what to order, fans of this ice cream shop recommend the soft-serve lemon, brownie sundae, strawberry shortcake sundae, or root beer float. Keep in mind that Carol's is only open part of the year, and it closes in the fall and winter months. Make sure you visit before the end of the season.

Cherry Hill Ice Cream

Cherry Hill Ice Cream has two locations: one in Townsend and one in Lunenburg. Cherry Hill definitely has it all, offering dozens of ice cream flavors, including strawberry cheesecake, pumpkin, mint chocolate chip, and French vanilla. You'll also find an assortment of frozen yogurt, sorbet, sherbet, and sugar-free ice cream. Cherry Hill even carries vegan ice cream. Once you choose a flavor, you can smother your treat in a variety of toppings, such as hot fudge, cherry dip, walnuts, and peanut butter cups. You'll want to check out the Lunenburg location for its adorable and classic barn building.

Hollis Hills Farm

Hollis Hills Farm is a destination for more than just ice cream. Hollis Hills Farm also has a full kitchen, bar, and live music on weekends. You can even show up for regular movie nights outside. Bring a set of chairs or a picnic blanket to spread out on the grass — you can listen to music and enjoy ice cream all summer.

In addition to ice cream, Hollis Hills Farm also offers meatball hoagies, mac ‘n' cheese, hot dogs, sandwiches, bowls, salads, and wraps. You can even pick your own flowers, berries, and other produce that’s in season. In the summer, nothing pairs better than an ice cream cone after a busy day spent picking sunflowers.

El Don Frappe

El Don Frappe is another casual dining spot that offers more than just ice cream. In fact, there are so many delicious shakes to choose from that you might struggle to pick your favorite. You'll have a chance to try the classics, such as chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. You can also opt for cereal shakes or fruity drinks, including banana and pineapple shakes. Of course, you can always order a candy-flavored shake that’s full of your favorite chocolate bars. 

In addition to your shake, you can enjoy a sweet plantain sandwich with pork roast, plantain lasagna, and a variety of tasty fried foods and sandwiches. Dine inside or sit outside to enjoy the beautiful weather.

Yo2Go

If you prefer frozen yogurt to traditional ice cream, Yo2Go in Leominster might be your new top choice for dessert. First, you choose your own self-serve frozen yogurt in your favorite flavor. You can then top your yogurt with fresh fruits, such as bananas, raspberries, kiwi, blueberries, or pineapple. If you aren't in the mood for fruit, you can also choose sweeter toppings, including boba, nuts, or candy.

Richardson's Ice Cream

Richardson's Ice Cream is unassuming at first glance, but the truth is that offers a lot in a small package. Window service at Richardson's Ice Cream means you have easy access to a list of delightful ice cream flavors as well as outdoor dining. You'll find plenty of traditional ice cream choices, but you'll also see some less common options, including Milky Way, butter pecan, and orange pineapple. You can also stop in for sherbet, frozen yogurt, or sorbet to go.

  • Hours: Noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Shake N Dog Company

Shake N Dog is a local spot for all things tasty. You'll find a selection of delicious casual meals, including hot dogs, kamikaze steak bombs, veggie burgers, salads, quinoa bowls, and melts. Of course, what you really want is a sweet milkshake. The good news is that Shake N Dog has a wide variety of flavors. Once you’ve worked through the classics, you can also try out a host of unique creations, such as Coconut Madness, Peanut Butter Jiggles, Tropical Acai, and Strawberry Grace.
