Subaru is jumping into the electric vehicle (EV) market with their all-new Solterra. It's the first EV from the manufacturer, who teamed up with Toyota to develop the platform for this Subaru EV and the Toyota bZ4X. With EV sales increasing every year, it made sense for Subaru to add to their lineup. The new Solterra is an EV that provides drivers with all the things they love about a Subaru but with a strong and efficient electric powertrain. Look at the features and equipment you can get with the new 2023 Subaru Solterra.
What Powers the Solterra?
2023 Subaru Solterra EV
The Solterra is different from other EVs in that it doesn't have an empty front truck (or frunk). Instead, this space houses a front electric motor with an inverter on top. The other electric motor sits in the rear. The two motors combine to generate 215 horsepower and deliver 249 lb-ft of torque. The 72.8 kW battery keeps the motors going, and you can charge this with either a 120- or 240-volt household power outlet or, for quicker charging times, a Level 3 fast charger. If you use a DC fast charging station, the battery will charge up to 80% in under an hour.
How is the Solterra’s Performance?
One of the most important performance factors with EVs is their driving range. The Solterra can go up to 222 miles with the Limited and Touring trims, and the Premium trim has a range of 228 miles.
As expected from electric motors, acceleration is instant and quick. The powertrain will smoothly accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 6.5 seconds. Once you get up to cruising speed, the ride quality in this EV is excellent. The suspension smooths out rough roads with ease and keeps the car firmly connected to the road for a confident feeling behind the wheel, whether you're going straight down the highway or cruising along winding back roads.
As expected from a Subaru, every Solterra comes standard with all-wheel drive. They also have an impressive 8.3 inches of ground clearance, and to make it even more capable, you can choose the X-Mode drive setting. This mode comes standard and will help you tackle rough terrain with extra traction in low-speed driving situations. The X-Mode also has settings for snow, dirt, and mud. This system makes the Solterra as capable as expected when you’re driving off the beaten path.
What Are the Solterra Trim Levels?
The Solterra has a sleek exterior design. It has the look of an SUV, with black plastic cladding under the headlights and an elevated driving position. Inside, the Solterra has plenty of storage. Behind the rear seats, a unique trick floor slides to a lower setting to reveal extra storage. When lowered, the cargo area has over 30 cubic feet of storage space.
Subaru offers the Solterra in three trim levels. These include the following:
Premium
The Premium is the entry-level model. It has 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, heated side exterior mirrors, and comes standard with windshield wiper de-icer. It also comes with tinted privacy glass and fixed crossbar mounting points. The base Premium trim comes standard with cloth upholstery, automatic climate control, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, and 4-mode heated front seats.
Limited
The Limited model builds on the Premium with added exterior features, such as LED fog lights, a height-adjustable power liftgate, roof rails, and a roof-mounted spoiler. It also has 20-inch wheels and power-folding side exterior mirrors. Inside, the Limited adds a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat with lumbar support and a memory function. It has heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel. The seats come covered in StarTex synthetic leather upholstery.
Touring
The Touring model is the top-level Solterra. It adds to the Limited model with a dual-pane panoramic glass roof, LED footwell lighting, and the option for a two-tone exterior paint scheme. The interior has ventilated front seats, a power sunshade for the glass roof, and ambient cabin lighting.
What Technology Is in the Solterra?
There's lots of technology in the Solterra, no matter which trim level you choose. The base Premium trim level has an 8-inch color touch screen, a six-speaker stereo system, HD radio, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite radio. Bluetooth streaming also comes standard, along with five USB ports. Subaru also offers a Wi-Fi hotspot. The mid-level Limited model adds a digital key to the list of tech features. This allows owners to access several functions, such as locking and unlocking the doors using a smartphone app. It also means you don't need a conventional key to access the Solterra.
The top-level Touring model upgrades the tech even more with a 12.3-inch multimedia display, wireless charging, and an upgraded Harman Kardon stereo system.
Solterra Safety Features
Every Solterra comes standard with Subaru's EyeSight driver-assist group of driver aids. This group of systems helps keeps you alert and aware and adds peace of mind every time you get behind the wheel.
EyeSight consists of several different systems, including the following:
Adaptive Cruise Control
This system helps keep you a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. EyeSight will automatically adjust your vehicle's speed and distance.
Lane-Keep Assist
This system will alert you if you stray out of your intended lane.
Pre-Collision Braking
This system helps you avoid or reduce the impact of a front-end collision.
Pre-Collision Throttle Management
If EyeSight detects an object you might hit, it will automatically reduce the power from the engine to minimize the impact and damage.
Additional standard safety systems for all Solterra models include a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking, and safe exit assist that warns exiting drivers and passengers if a vehicle is approaching from the rear.
