For the adventurous soul, rock climbing can be a great thrill. If you love the great outdoors, you’re sure to have realized that you can't do your favorite activities outside in Massachusetts all year round. In fact, you may have to visit an indoor rock-climbing venue from time to time. If you're excited about climbing all through the year, here are some of the indoor and outdoor destinations in and around Fitchburg that you may want to check out.

In Littleton, MetroRock is one of the most popular indoor climbing destinations. If you're a new climber, you can enjoy a series of auto-belays throughout the gym, including on many of the tall walls. The system will lower you back to the ground slowly and safely. You'll also have access to bouldering, which doesn’t use ropes. Experienced climbers are required to take a test to enjoy top-rope and lead climbing.
MetroRock Littleton also offers climbing clubs for those who don't want to climb alone. If you have little ones, a training camp can help them become great climbers in no time. Adults with little or no experience can learn the ropes here too.
Address: 1200 Constitution Ave., Littleton, MA
Hours: 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday to Sunday.
Leominster State Forest
If you're still dedicated to climbing outdoors, Leominster State Forest is the perfect place to do it. The park offers 4,500 acres of land situated between Princeton, Leominster, Fitchburg, Westminster, and Sterling. The hiking trails are great, but climbers will also find a lot to work with here. The most popular destination for climbing is Crow Hill Ledges, which offers unique opportunities.
The Crow Hills climbing area generally faces east-southeast. This area can get quite wet, which means the time of year has a lot to do with when people climb. A dry winter leads to an earlier climbing season. You'll find a variety of great climbing routes in this area.
Address: 90 Fitchburg Road, Westminster
North Ridge Mountain Guides
Do you prefer some guidance when you climb or hike? Do you have experience hiking and climbing? If so, a guided tour provided by North Ridge Mountain Guides can offer you a personalized experience through the White Mountains of New Hampshire. You'll learn how to rappel down waterfalls, climb through the ice, and explore rocky terrains. You'll also learn a lot about climbing, safety, and the mountains.
Central Rock Gym - Worcester
Central Rock Gym in Worcester is another indoor option. This gym offers 16,000 square feet of climbing terrain and 4,000 square feet of bouldering. You can also enjoy a 42-foot-tall lead wall and a variety of top rope and lead stations.
Central Rock Gym also offers various programs. For example, kids over the age of 8 can join a summer climbing team to develop their skills. Youth programs are available each day for kids ages 3.5 to 18. If you're a beginner adult, you can take an intro belay class.

Adults with less experience can learn a lot by taking climbing lessons.
Climbing meet-ups and youth programs are also available. QuICK is a group dedicated to LGBTQ climbers. Climbing sessions with the group are available every other Wednesday. When you're comfortable climbing, you may even consider the adult team, which is a non-competitive program.
